SYLLABUS COE 8053 - PRACTICUM IN VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION COUNSELING (Credit : 3 semester hours) Catalog Description: Seminar and supervised field experience. Prerequisites: * permission of the instructor * pre-approved practicum site * proof of current professional liability insurance * COE 8423 - Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Course Description: A three-semester credit hour course involving a minimum of 100 clock hours of field-based experience in an appropriate rehabilitation agency or facility. Also requires weekly class attendance for group supervision and discussion of issues related to professional development. Course Objectives: To provide the student * an introductory experience in the field of vocational rehabilitation * supervised activities directed toward professional development * an overview of requisite vocational rehabilitation counselor skills * structured examination of professional conduct and ethics Topics to be covered: * Professional ethics and legal issues * Preparing for case staffing and peer reviews * Professional credentials * The importance of participating in professional organizations * Appropriate use of support personnel * Time management techniques * Resume preparation, writing cover letters, canvassing job markets * Stress management and avoiding burn-out * Office management skills * Case-management and quality control Student Activities: Each student will * staff a case from their respective practicum site * design and implement a personal improvement project for himself/herself * develop a personal portfolio and a professional resume * meet at least ten hours with his/her on-site supervisor for individual supervision during the practicum experience * keep a record (log) of activities completed during the practicum experience * actively participate in class discussions Methods of instruction: Lecture, small group activities, and class discussion Method of evaluation: Both the university supervisor and the field supervisor will evaluate the student's field experience. The student will also be evaluated on written assignments as well as receive a grade on the final examination.
